Braat Night
The 15th of Sha’ban (Barat) is the night in which the deeds of the people of the past year are presented to Allah.
Imam Hassan Basri, may God have mercy on him, used to be afraid on this night, and he used to say that it is the night of Barat. My deeds are presented to Allah. On this night, a person is nurtured, health, illness, well-being and all things are determined for the next year of the person.
Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, would come out on this night, crying, looking at the sky and saying, “O Allah, the deeds are presented to you today. How will Allah be aware of Ali’s deeds?”
The Companions came and asked the Messenger of God
O Messenger of Allah, when the 15th night of Sha’ban falls, you spend it in worship and sleep and fast on the 15th day of Sha’ban. What is this for?
The Messenger of God said to him: I am fasting on the 15th day of the month of Sha’ban, so that on this day the deeds of man will be white, and I like that my worship should begin with fasting on the 15th of the month of Sha’ban. I pray for this at night and I spend it awake because I like that when my deeds are presented to Allah at the end of the year, then I also spend them in worship and the last act in my deeds is worship.
The Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was that when the night of Barat (15th of Sha’ban) came, they would go to Jannat al-Baqi and spend the night there in worship.
Aisha (R.A.) says that on this night, when we worship the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and when he bowed his head, he would stretch it so much that I would say, “God forbid, his soul has seized me.” When I looked at him, I shook the feet of Mubarak, then I realized that he was alive, and then I put my ear close to him who was crying in prostration and prayed (O Allah, I seek refuge from your punishment). O God, I seek refuge from your anger and punishment, O God, I seek refuge in your direction and move towards you, O God, who is worthy of worship, we do not worship you.
This night is also known as the night of liberation, that is, the night of liberation from sin.
